The Hortus Bulborum is a foundation that functions with volunteers.
Even though a lot of work is done by these volunteers, there are still the necessary costs which have to be paid such as land rent, care of crops, drying of the bulbs, giving temperature treatments by third parties, peeling of the tulips and not forgetting the use of organic manure etc. All in all, these costs are so high that the foundation cannot exist without the help of donors and sponsors.
